Intern for the Pittsburgh Pirates!


The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking for a Diversity Initiative Intern. 

Job Summary
This intern will work in conjunction with the Community and Public Affairs Department with the execution of community programs, events, and program development. Special focus on Diversity Initiatives and programs around specific diverse and multicultural audiences. Programs include Jackie Robinson Essay and Poetry Contest, Disability Awareness, Latino Celebration Summer reading programs, African-American Heritage Weekend, Youth Baseball Camp; Softball initiatives etc. Intern will also assist with events for the department which may include game day support and Pirates Charities events.
Primary Responsibilities
• Assist in the development and coordination of major events including diversity outreach, reading programs, Heritage Weekend, etc.
• Handle general office duties such as data entry, copying, filing, etc.
• Develop and manage the Pirates diversity database.
• Represent the organization at community functions where key community contacts may be in attendance.
• Coordinate ticket distribution programs through outreach to non-profit organizations and community groups (i.e. Awareness Series/Give-Back Days).
• All other duties as assigned by the Manager of Diversity Initiatives.
Required Qualifications
• Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited institution.
• Candidates majoring in Business Administration, Communications, Sports Management, or related area.
• Junior, Senior, or Graduate level students.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.)

Law & Order : Job Edition

Did you ever wonder how what you do in college might affect your employment or graduate school prospects?  This program will provide an overview of typical screening methods including background checks (driving records and criminal), drug and alcohol tests, credit history reports, investigative consumer reports and employment verification practices.   Legal issues associated with background checks and employment screening will be covered as well as specifics about the ARD program and expungements.  The topic of social media will also be addressed.  A panel of employers and graduate school representatives will discuss their screening practices and respond to student questions.  (Students will have the opportunity to submit questions confidentially.)

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR A PRACTICE INTERVIEW:
Mocks are posted in ColonialTRAK under 'On-campus Interviews'.  Refer to the Career Center website at www.rmu.edu/careercenter.
  1. Click on the ColonialTRAK tab in the left column of the screen.
  2. Enter your username and password. 
  3. On the ColonialTRAK main menu page, select 'On Campus Interviews' on the top toolbar. Then choose 'Sign up for Interviews.
  4. The practice interviews will all have 'MOCK' as the Employer Name.  The Linked Job will say 'Practice Interview,' then list applicable majors and the organization that will be conducting the practice interview.  The MOCK with PNC will be near the bottom of the current listings.
  5. To sign up for a schedule that interests you, click on the 'Linked Job' of that posting.
  6. On the next screen, scroll down below the yellow line and click on 'Interview Date' that you prefer.
  7. On the next screen, scroll to the bottom of the page, which will show you time slots that are still available.  Click the 'Sign up' button next to the time slot that fits your schedule, and then click "Sign up."  The schedule will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  8. Note:  You must have a resume uploaded in ColonialTRAK to sign up for a practice interview.
Please note that the Career Center's On-Campus Recruiting Policy applies to students participating in practice interviews.
ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING POLICY:
Canceling Interviews 
It is expected that students/alumni will honor their obligation to keep their interview reservation. If a student/alumnus finds it is necessary to cancel an interview, the student/alumnus must notify the Career Center at least 24 hours before the time of an interview scheduled Tuesday through Friday and 72 hours before a Monday interview appointment.
No-Show/Late Cancellation Policy
Students/alumni who "No-Show" or "Late Cancel" an interview will be required to send a letter of apology to the employer and give a copy of the letter to the Career Center before the student/alumnus may participate in any additional campus interviews. A student/alumnus who "No Shows" or "Late Cancels" a total of two times in any combination will forfeit their interviewing privileges for the remainder of the academic year.
Late Arrival to Interviews
If a student is late for an interview, it is up to the discretion of the employer as to whether the interview with the student will be conducted.
Bad Weather Policy
If classes are canceled because of inclement weather, interviews will also be canceled. Please contact the Career Center to reschedule your interview.

Night at the Pittsburgh Symphony


Hello All,

You are still cordially invited to Robert Morris University School of Business "Night at the Pittsburgh Symphony."    The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is playing Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection", by Gustav Mahler with Manfred Honeck, conductor.  More information is provided on the attached sheet.

The event is a networking opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School of Business.  You are invited to receive a School of Business pin before the concert and to attend a complimentary dessert reception following the concert.  All RMU students are invited as guests of the School of Business.  So, please invite your friends to accompany you to Heinz Hall.

Students also receive complimentary bus transportation to and from Heinz Hall and a complimentary ticket to the concert.  Buses will depart from the Lower Sewall Center parking lot at 6:30 p.m. on Friday October 19.  I ask that you be at the parking lot by 6:10 p.m.  Please contact Laura Whitaker (whitaker@rmu.edu or 412-397-6356) to reserve a seat on the bus and a concert ticket.

2nd Annual Somma Integrity First Intersection Navigating the Challenges Ethics Workshop


Last week’s 2nd Annual Somma Integrity First Intersection Navigating the Challenges ethics workshop was a success!  Over 80 SBUS students, SBUS faculty and staff joined together for an engaging discussion of ethics and group case analysis exercise.  Thanks to the following students in Professor Grim’s Advanced Labor Management Relations class who served as group facilitators:  Jason Beadle, James Biedrzycki, Brennon Dauginikas, Rehema Emanuel, Sean Gergacs, Jake Hayes, Kylie Jorden, Jordan Kristek, Jamie Kusevich, Adam Mills, Evan Penner, Michael Renda, Ryan Schwartzel and, Lauren Wagenhoffer.

At the end of the case exercise, it was difficult to select only one group from the outstanding case analyses submitted; instead faculty identified two groups that developed insightful analyses of the ethical dilemmas and suggested feasible and relevant recommendations. Congratulations to the following students who worked in these groups:  Nicole Masciola, Sarah Gordon, Marcus Paxton, Cody Redmond, Roberto DaSilva, Melissa Cleis, Heather Niewierski, Deborah Naples, James Biedrzycki, Carissa Smith and Rehema Emanuel

A seasoned entrepreneur is building a business plan for launching a for-profit business in Cambodia, seeking to leverage that country’s comparative advantages for the development and marketing of products made from bamboo.  The objective of the enterprise is to build a triple bottom line measured by financial profit, environmental sustainability, and social advancement. 
The Intern will be guided by the entrepreneur and will be responsible for contributions including:
  • Evaluating the Bamboo Flooring Market in the US and Europe, analyzing product types, customer preferences, sales trends.
  • Evaluating US distribution channels for bamboo flooring, describing the flow of goods, buyers, pricing and tradeoffs among the various channels.
  • Conducting pricing analysis on bamboo flooring sold in the US.
  • Making recommendations on positioning, distribution, and sales.
  • Conducting competitor analysis on manufacturers and distributors of bamboo flooring.
  • Evaluating market opportunities in the US and Europe for toys made from bamboo.
Qualifications:
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and explore
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to use internet to dig and to find answers
  • Ability to summarize thoughts in prose and concepts in graphics

*This is an unpaid internship.  The intern will gain functional experience in Marketing and Strategic Analysis, and will understand the entrepreneurial process and key elements of international business.

-  Proofs and edits verbatim comments and other qualitative data
     -  Codes verbatims based on specified code frames
     -  Analyzes research data using Microsoft Excel, SPSS,
        or Microsoft Access; tabulates data and develops formats for charts,
        graphs, and tables for reports
  • Reports to Project Director/Manager; interacts with Interviewing Supervisor, Interviewers, and Administrative Assistants
  • Interacts with clients on occasion
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Required proficiency in Microsoft Excel; an ability to work with databases; SPSS would be an asset but not essential
  • Course work in research methods and statistics is preferred but not essential
  • Project skills include: keen attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness; ability to edit information for spelling and grammar; ability to develop charts, graphs, and tables from data; ability to meet all deadlines
  • Interpersonal skills include: willingness to make decisions; initiative to identify potential problems or improvement opportunities in a timely manner; ability to follow instructions carefully; ability to coordinate and cooperate with other members of a team; ability to communicate with clients as required
