Duck Withdrawals

While the duck was still in Pittsburgh, we have come to the realization that this is one of the most unconventional marketing approaches we have seen in a long time. The duck has reportedly brought in well over 1 million people to the city of Pittsburgh. With that, business revenues have gone up tremendously. Hotels and restaurants have offered special “quackages,” and even duck themed food items. Businesses have also sold countless duck themed memorabilia.

Even though the duck has now left the waters of Pittsburgh, people are still talking about it. There was even a petition going around that was trying to get the duck to stay for a longer amount of time. Until the duck makes its appearance in another city, people have to turn to social media for pictures and videos of it. To get this search for content started, we have a picture below of when Dr. Jones visited the duck as well as a video, and two vines we found!

What the Duck?

Picture Taken by Dr. Steven Clinton

Whether you love it or you hate it, you are all aware of the 40x30 foot inflatable rubber duck that has arrived in Pittsburgh. On September 27th, the duck hit the waters of the Allegheny River and has been a must see attraction ever since. Even Dr. Steven Clinton, the Marketing Department Head here at RMU, has gone down to Pittsburgh to see what all the hype is about.

“You can’t help but smile when you look at it,” says Clinton. He and his wife recently went down to see the duck and they both experienced the child-like happiness that comes with it. Looking around, Clinton noticed that everyone that was down there to see the duck had a huge smile on their face. I guess there’s just something about a huge rubber duck that makes people smile.

Another thing that attracts people to the duck is the duck’s artistic value. Clinton went down to see it as a part of his research into “art-related publicity for the City of Pittsburgh.”

Ever since its arrival, the duck has drawn people from around the region to Point State Park. Some people come for the artistic value, some to take pictures, or even just for a smile. Whatever the reason may be, there isn’t going to be a shortage of spectators or picture takers at Point State Park as long as the duck is in Pittsburgh.

RMU Hosts Sustainable Enterprises of the Future Conference

Last week, Robert Morris University hosted the Sustainable Enterprises of the Future Conference. The conference objective is to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information related to sustainability issues in management, economics, marketing, accounting, finance, communication, and industrial engineering. This year’s theme was “Social Profit.”

At a conference it is typical that “Best Paper” awards are handed out. At this particular conference, there were two “Best Paper” awards:

1. Faculty Track
2. Student Track

Both awards were based on the level of rigor demonstrated in the paper. The faculty track paper that was chosen had – in the opinion of the reviewers – the strongest research methodology. This, in turn, resulted in statistical results that supported the theoretical basis of the work. The faculty winner (pictured below) is Agnieszka Sitko-Lutek of M.Curie Sklodwska University in Poland. The student winner, Katie Leone of Chatham University, submitted a paper based on her thesis. It too exhibited a high level of academic rigor.

The Pitch

It’s time for The Pittsburgh Ad Fed’s Education Committee’s annual program called “The Pitch.”

The Pitch is a one day (Wednesday, October 16, 2013) marketing challenge hosted at 5 local advertising agencies. The agencies participating this year include:

Brunner
Chemistry
Gatesman + Dave
Marc USA
Mullen

Juniors and Seniors in integrated marketing/advertising are broken into teams of 10 and paired with an agency. A local non-profit partner provides a real-life challenge. The students, with the guidance of both agency folks (creative, media, accounting, planning, etc) and Ad Fed board members, spend the day working on the project. Each team then turns in a written proposal and a video recorded response. The non-profit partner chooses the winning team.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis. There is a $35 registration fee which includes student membership into the AAF. Forms may be returned via email to rebecca@big-science.com but your payment must be received before you can be added to the list. Rebecca’s number for any questions: 412-471-2400.

Students at the Coraopolis Community Garden

Recently, a group of RMU students enrolled in the “Sustainability Marketing” course paid a visit to the Coraopolis Community Garden. If you are unsure about what Sustainable Marketing actually is, it is best defined as the process of placing traditional marketing strategy and tactics behind services and products that fall into the environmental category.

Dr. Jill Maher, the professor who teaches the Sustainability Marketing course, says that “It was an insightful and meaningful visit where we learned about gardening practices from Grow Pittsburgh.”

In this course, the students get to work on a business plan for our very own sustainable campus garden here at RMU. This particular visit to the community garden provided a wealth of information for these students.

These are the students enrolled in Dr. Maher's Sustainability Marketing in Summer 2013. The class visited Eichner's Farm in Wexford to gain information about sustainable farming and agriculture. They also visited Phipps Conservatory's Center for Sustainable Landscape and took a walking tour in downtown Pittsburgh starting with the sustainable Convention Center structure and then Market Square, where there is evidence of sustainable economic development.

Dr. Jones visits Japan!

This past summer (2012), I had the wonderful opportunity to spend about a month in Japan.  I visited some current friends and met new friends.  Here are a couple of my adventures:
There was a lot of bike traffic on the sidewalks.  Many parents had child seats in the front of the bike and the rear.
I took a night train from Tokyo to Kagoshima.  This was the bed.  You received a comforter and a pillowcase - no pillow and the bed was just a carpet, no mattress.
Corridor for the train.

Most of the food was delicious like these Chinese dumplings; some of it was, well, let's just say different.

These delicious Chinese dumplings cooked right in front of me at a lunch counter in Tokyo.  My friend Clare enjoyed this beautiful lunch.

Below is Kobe beef.  What looks like potato chips are actually garlic chips.

Sometimes I couldn't identify the food, like the picture below.

The picture above was in front of a foot massage machine in a Japanese onsen in Kobe.  It tells you what parts of the body are connected to what areas of the feet.  The picture below is of a special foot treatment called Dr. Fish.  The little fish eat the dead skin off of your feet.  It feels really strange, but your feet feel great afterwards.

These ladies were in Kyoto.  The gentlemen below were participating in a big festival near Tokyo with lots of drums, flutes, and other instruments.  The musicians took turns playing and pulling the float.

I'm a fan of the tv program Ninja Warrior.  I got to meet 3 famous Ninja Warrior contestants while in Japan.  This is Yuuji Urushihara - the reigning champion.
This is Shingo Yamamoto who has participated in every Sasuke (the original Japanese name for the show; Ninja Warrior is the American title.)
Below is Makoto Nagano - the 2nd champion (there have only been 3).
We went to an amazing theatre production in Miyazaki area.  Everywhere we went, Makoto Nagano ran into his fans.
My first jet ski ride!
Above is the view from a mountain in Kobe.  Notice the amazing architecture.
Below is the Golden Palace in Kyoto.  I am pictured with one of our exchange students from Japan who showed me around Kyoto while I was there.

Chinese palace in Yokohama.
Some train cars were designated for women only because the trains would get so crowded and women didn't like being crowded by men.

No tattoos are allowed in Japanese baths/spas because they are associated with gangs in Japan.

Water taxi in Tokyo

Can you guess what this sculpture is?  Answer below if you scroll down.

Answer: this is supposed to represent beer foam.  It is on top of the Asahi building in Tokyo.
